FAQs host family accommodation PDF Print Email

Looking for accommodation? We offer you a wide range of options according to your specific needs.

Bear in mind that it is very important for you to book your host family before your arrival so we will have it ready for you. Otherwise we cannot guarantee any availability.

Further details will be shown ahead.

What does “host family accommodation” mean?

When we talk about “host families”, we usually refer to both conventional families or single women who want to share their homes and enjoy the company of foreign students while they speak Spanish to them.

Without any doubt, this is the best combination: to take a professional language course and at the same time experience the real Spanish life. In no time you will be picking up common expressions and idiomatic phrases. We are completely convinced that you will feel very much at home and will enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with the independence of having your own key.

Where are they located?

We guarantee that your home will be no more than a 25 minute walk away from the school. Many of our host families live within a 10 minute walk from IH Murcia school.

Are host families reliable?

Our staff personally interviews all the families before placing students in their homes. We can match them with a family and a roommate – if required - with whom we think they will be compatible.

Our families accommodating students do not run this scheme just like a family business; they have a personal interest in intercultural contact, and you will be accepted and treated as a family member.

What kind of atmosphere can I expect?

The family will speak only Spanish (our families are trained to have foreigners in their homes) and serve typical Spanish food. We have collaborated with many of these families for three or more years without problems and we feel confident that you will be satisfied.

Type of accommodation in hosting families

You can select a single or a double room and have a choice between full board, with three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) or half board, with two meals a day (breakfast and lunch or dinner). Please note that double room is only available to students coming together.

How do I book?

The reservation is made on a weekly basis. The accommodation is available between 12:00 h p.m. on the Sunday prior to the first day of the course – Monday - until 12,00 h p.m. on the Saturday after they complete the course. It is also possible to request additional days but IHDEMU does not guarantee the availability of extra days of accommodation in the same host family.

All students should inform IHDEMU or the host family in advance of their approximate time of arrival. In the event that one of the previously mentioned parties is not contacted, IHDEMU will not be held responsible for greeting or picking up the student upon arrival.

Host family accommodation fees do include once a week laundry, bed linens and the number of meals requested but no ironing services. Students should bring along towels with them.

For last minute registrations we cannot guarantee to fulfill required preferences. In the event that a student is not satisfied with the assigned accommodation and he/she is rightfully justified in his claim, he/she will be allowed to change to another accommodation of the same type.

All students living with a Spanish host family must notify IH de MURCIA well in advance of any special dietary requirements or health problems.

What rules do I have to follow?

IHDEMU will provide the student’s host family information within the week prior to the starting course dates to avoid any uncomfortable last minute cancellation or changes.

Try to accept and understand the habits and customs of your family. The more you share with them, the richer your experience will be.

If you intend to arrive at a different hour than you initially told us, inform us in advance.

Do not expect too much luxury in your room; you will find the essential things you need (bed, chair, table and a cupboard). It is advisable to keep your room tidy in order to allow the family to regularly clean and change the bed linen.

You can come to an agreement with them on certain cleaning days.

Each family has their own eating times, so you have to adjust to their timetable. If you come at a different time or don't come at all, always inform the family in advance; If your breakfast time is at a different time to the family’s one, they will leave you breakfast ready the night before.

You are not allowed to prepare your own meals.

If you want to change your accommodation after arrival, you have to tell the school administration.

Always apply common sense but:

  • If you want to leave something in the fridge, it is advisable to ask the host family beforehand.
  • If you come home late at night, try to be as silent as possible.
  • If you break something in your family’s home, you will be asked to replace it.
  • You are not allowed to wash and iron your clothes by yourself.
  • You can only use the phone for receiving calls.
  • Try not to waste water and light; there is a huge concern about water consumption in Murcia.
  • The family living room is not always the best place for studying or doing homework. We suggest you use your own room for this.
  • Try to avoid using family belongings without their permission.

Take care of your family home as you would take care of your own home.

Other useful information

If a you decide that you want to postpone or take a break from any course for unjustified personal reasons, you will loose any right to a monetary refund, and the course/accommodation will not be made up. If there is any problem with your accommodation it is imperative that you inform school staff immediately in order to find a solution. There will NOT be any administration charge for the change the first time; after that, 50 € will be charged for administration fees.

You will lose your deposit if:

Before you make any sort of transfer, you will receive our tenancy agreement for you to read. Please take a close look at the terms.

This procedure should be STRICTLY followed in order to book a flat:

  • Get to our web page www.ihdemu.com and send us your booking form.
  • Attached to the form, you can give us some additional information and some other specific details that may help us find a comfortable accommodation for you.
  • When we find you a flat according to your needs, you will have to complete your booking by transferring a deposit to our bank account (account details are provided below). Please e-mail us your bank receipt. Note that without this deposit we cannot reserve your accommodation and guarantee flat availability.
  • When you arrive you should come to our main office (Calle Enrique Villar nº13, 4ºB – 30008 Murcia) so we can sign the contract and give you the keys. You can also use our taxi services or bus transfer to Murcia.

How much do I need to pay for my deposit?

For a full academic course (10 months) you need to pay a deposit equal to a full month’s rent. For shorter stays, you will only pay a proportional to the length of your stay (i.e. half of your monthly rent for a five-month-stay, and 70% for a seven-month-stay).

How can I pay for my deposit?

Our bank details are the following:

  • Name: Instituto Hispánico de Murcia.
  • Bank: SabadellCAM.
  • Address: Av. Juan Carlos I, 24, 30.840 Alhama (Murcia), Spain.
  • IBAN / BIC: ES25 00811162350001038109 / BSAB ESBB. If you are in Murcia you can also come to the school and pay your deposit cash.

How, to whom and when can I pay for my rent?

You need to get in touch with your flat’s owner and pay him directly. Some owners prefer to go to tenant’s houses and charge the tenant in cash while some others would like a bank transfer. Rent should be paid by the fifth day of every month.

What is the minimum/maximum period I can book a flat?

You can book your flat for the time you need, from a week to a full academic year.

When and how do I get my apartment keys?

You should confirm your estimated time of arrival. In the event that there is any change, you need to let us know as soon as possible by calling the contact number we will give you once you book your flat. We will then inform your landlord.

Once you are in Murcia you need to get in touch with him to let him know about your arrival so that you can meet him at your new flat and get your keys.

Are bed sheets, blankets, and towels included?

For hygienic reasons and for the sake of convenience, bed sheets, blankets, and towels are considered as household and personal use items. Hence, they are not included and you should bring them with you.

Are pets allowed?

You should let us know beforehand in order to inform your landlord and your roommates to check any possible allergies.

Is there a phone home line?

Our shared flats are rarely provided with home line. If so, expenses will be at your own cost.

Is Internet access provided?

All flats are set up for Internet access and it is up to the tenant whether or not to install Internet connection. Within the same flat there might be some tenants who are interested in having Internet access, although other tenants might not want to have it. In this case, it is possible to contract Internet and share the monthly bill among those tenants who want to surf the web.

In order to set up Internet you need to complete the following steps:

  • You first need to have a NIE number. In order to get it you have to go to “Oficina de Extranjería”, located in “Carretera Nacional 301 Km. 388, Molina de Segura”. To get there take the bus line 22 from Plaza Circular. Office opens from 8:00 to 14:00 weekdays.
  • Once you have your NIE you have to open a bank account in a Spanish bank. You can open an account for free in some banks, not all.
  • Once you have your account number you have to come to Instituto Hispánico de Murcia and we will do our best to assist you.

May I move in earlier or move out later than agreed when I booked my flat?

Should you need extra days in order to move in or out, you need to let us know in advance so that we can help you. Extra nights will have extra cost.

Is there a washing machine?

Indeed.

What appliances are provided in my apartment?

All flats are equipped with washers, refrigerator and kitchen. You can find the following appliances in many of our flats: microwave, dishwasher, dryer, iron, TV, fan, video, DVD, computer, air conditioning, heating, TDT, and hair dryer. However, there is no compulsory requirement to provide them. If you would like to know what appliances are available, you can read it on your flat info or simply ask us.

Does rent cost cover utilities bills (electricity, water, gas, community, and internet)?

Bills are not included in your rent although some landlords include the above mentioned costs in the rent. In this case, this piece of info will be added in the flat description.

How much do I need to pay to cover my bills?

Cost for electricity, water and gas depend on your personal use habits, but average could be 35€ per person monthly. Once the landlord received the bills, he will send you a copy so that you can check how much you consumed.

So we advise you to make a proper and rational use of electricity, gas and water.

What happens if I cancel my reservation before my arrival?

If you cancel your reservation, in compliance with what is written in the contract you need to sign, you will lose the money paid for the reservation and deposit. Hence you will not be reimbursed under any circumstances.

What happens if I cancel my accommodation once the rental term begins?

If you decide to move out before the end of the agreed rental period (shall be subject to the terms and conditions agreed once you signed your contract or by means of a confirmation email), you are not entitled to receive any reimbursement as far as your deposit is concerned.

Who will return my deposit once my rental period is over and when can I get it back?

We will return your deposit when you leave your flat after your landlord´s approval. You are asked to give at least one week notice to your landlord and ourselves to check that all bills have been paid and give you your deposit back.

What happens if something is broken?

You should tell your landlord right away. If you break something due to incorrect and improper use, you will need to pay for the repair. On the contrary, the landlord will take charge of any other issue right away. When light bulbs burn out, you need to replace them.

When can I go to the Instituto Hispànico de Murcia in order to talk about the management of my flat?

Our office hours are from Monday to Friday, from 9.30 to 14.00 and from 17.30 to 21.00. IMPORTANT: In order to provide a good service please contact us to make an appointment.

In my flat we use gas: What number can I call in order to buy the gas tank and how much does it cost?

Call 902 103 100. Tanks cost around 12€ and they are supposed to last about two months in a 3-person-flat. We recommend to have a spare tank for your own sake.

Am I allowed to have friends, relatives or partners in my place?

You always need to use common sense. Of course you are allowed to have guests in your place, but always act according to ethical standards. For instance, it is not fair if one of your relatives comes and lives with you for a month. You should always need to let your landlord know in advance about your guests’ arrival and the amount of time they will stay in your place.

What should I do if I want to rent the same flat again in the future?

Remember that you found your flat thanks to our hard work and good service provided, so any new future rent should be made by contacting us. Renting a flat directly to the landlord is not allowed and might have a 500€ penalty fine. You should also tell us about any personal arrangements you may make as far as your flat rent is concerned.

Will Instituto Hispánico de Murcia be responsible for students and/or landlords’ actions?

Instituto Hispánico de Murcia will only act as means of contact between the tenant and the landlord. You should avail yourself to the terms and conditions agreed upon the rental contract that you shall sign.

Under no circumstances will Instituto Hispánico de Murcia be responsible for the actions taken by any party.

Participants must have health & liability insurance covering all costs that may arise during the course duration.

There is a different course book for every language level, so if the student gets a higher level – approximately after 60 hours of language teaching – the student will have to buy another course book. Price for extra exercise book is 15 €.

12th Visas

Citizens of most European countries do not need a Visa to enter Spain. Students coming from other countries should obtain information regarding the requirements for obtaining a VISADO (VISA) at their nearest Spanish Embassy or Consulate. For general information regarding visas for language courses, please click here.

The certificates that accredit and confirm the enrolment in a Spanish program at IH Murcia can only be signed, sealed and sent by people authorized by IH Murcia, who will not be held responsible for rejected Visa applications due to the fact that these documents do not have any official power and merely serve as confirmation of a course in one of our centres. Such documents will only be sent to cover the amount of course time initially contracted by the student.

IH Murcia will send out by ordinary mail, e-mail or fax, free of charge and to any student who asks for them, the following documents - if and only if the total cost of the booked programme has been paid:

  • Confirmation of the Spanish program chosen by the student.
  • Invoice for the total cost of the booked programme (course + accommodation, if any).

In the event that the student should urgently need the originals of any of these documents, IH Murcia will send them and charge the cost of the express mail to the student.

In order to avoid any problems with the Spanish Immigration office and with the Spanish Tax Law Enforcement Agency, we sadly inform that if a student visa is rejected IH Murcia will not be able to refund any money, although we will give 1 YEAR credit to students to obtain their visa and take the booked course in our school.

Under any circumstances IH Murcia will not be responsible for visa rejections.

Student will be obliged to send us a clear copy of the original formal proof of the rejected visa.

13th Minimum number of students required

There is a minimum number of 2 students in order to run any course, except for special tailor made courses and ERASMUS courses (minimum 3 students). If there is only one student enrolled in an specific course, individual lessons will be offered and the teaching time will be reduced to reflect the group course fee charged when booking.

If there are less than 3 students in the ERASMUS course they can:

  • either have a course break and wait for another student to enroll, so the minimum of 3 students will be fulfilled.
  • or be offered to carry on, but the teaching time will be reduced to reflect the group course fee charged when booking in the first place.

Fees paid will not be reimbursed if student does not accept the above options.

IMPORTANT: We know that reserving the right for reducing lessons causes insecurity for students at the moment of enrollment which may detract people from booking with our school in the first place. If there are not sufficient participants at the moment of enrollment, we will explicitly inform the student about possible consequences upon enrollment 7 days before the start of the course, and students will be notified about a reduction of the number of lessons. Having said that, this fact rarely takes place.

14th Airport pick up taxi service

Arrival manager will wait a maximum of 60 minutes after expected arrival time for the student.

If student does not show up/ does not contact the arrival manager the airport-pickup service will expire but student will still have to pay for the service.

If student contacts arrival manager with a change of arrival time while arrival manager is already at the airport a 10 € supplement will be charged for every 30 minutes additional waiting time.

15th Long duration courses

Students booking a long duration course - i.e. more than 4 weeks - will only be able to take any breaks within the contracted period under a penalty of 100 € every time the student wishes so.

16th Pictures & promotional material

By attending an IH Murcia event, workshop, or course, you are providing your consent for any media (photos or video) captured at the event, workshop, or course to be used, as determined by IH Murcia, for promotional or archival purposes. If you have questions about the collection, use, and disclosure of this information by IH Murcia please contact us.

17th Disabilities

Instituto Hispánico de Murcia welcomes applications from students with disabilities and always do whatever we can to assist with your study abroad plans.

Students with disabilities will find our school site more accessible than others. To start with, our website visitors can listen to any selected text from our site.

We are happy to adapt the programmes in order to cover your specific needs. You must specify what support you require in order to be able to adjust certain installations, especially where accommodation is required.

18th Students & Agency

After initial application is received from any Agency, agencies are responsible for dealing with the student directly from that point on.

IH Murcia holds no responsibility for bookings made through agencies. They must be truthful in relation to our profile and school information.

Agencies must make all students aware of their cancelation policies before requesting full payment.

IH Murcia will not enter into any disputes between the agency and the student.

19th Acceptance of the General Conditions

Participation in our courses implies knowledge of and acceptance by the student and/or his/her parents or legal guardian of all General Conditions included here.
